The
State of Nevada can be divided into five geographical regions.
Las
Vegas Territory consists of the pointy southern part
of the state and includes Las Vegas, of course; Boulder
City and Henderson, both towns between Las Vegas and
Hoover Dam; Laughlin, on the Colorado River.
Pioneer
Territory is extends from the Las Vegas Territory to
the middle of the state, the upper extent roughly seesawing
about the latitude of Lake Tahoe and Reno. Here is where
historic mining and ghost towns proliferate and mountain
bikers, ATVers, sandboarders, and paragliders practice
their arts. Gold is still being mined here.
Just
above Pioneer Territory is Pony Express Territory. As
might be expected it consists of a narrow strip of land
spanning the state. Is U.S. Highway 50, really "The
Loneliest Road in America?" Not for everyone. The
town of Eureka, originally a mining town in the 1800s,
has preserved and restored a number of historic buildings,
most note ably the town opera house which has been turned
into a performing arts and convention center.
Cowboy
Country, the northernmost territory, is defined by the
Humbolt River. Followed by the transcontinental railroad,
the Humbolt Trail passes through what is perhaps the
last remaining true West of cowboys and free-range cattle.
Finally,
we come to Reno-Tahoe Territory, a narrow strip along
the western edge of the northern half of the state. Here
is the beauty of the Carson and Sierra Nevada mountain
ranges and, at the northern end, the Black Rock Desert.
Carson City, the state capitol, is here, as are Reno
and the eastern shore of Lake Tahoe.
